About Poker Tables
Overview
Poker tables are used for distributing cards and placing bets with poker chips in the game of poker. The main types of poker games played on poker tables are Texas Hold 'Em, Omaha-hi/lo, five- and seven-card stud. Poker is a popular game played at most casinos around the world, and the game has been made famous by the popular televised show "The World Series of Poker:" Poker tables range from homemade card tables to elite custom-made casino tables.
Types
Poker tables for home or casual settings can be either round, rectangular, octagonal or oval. Some tables resemble portable card tables and can fold up for easy carrying, while more expensive versions can come in solid oak or mahogany with matching chair sets and upholstery. Casino style poker tables are usually bar height or around three feet from the ground and allow for a slight indent in the table for the dealer to deal the cards, and then an area on the opposite side for the players to sit and place bets. There are even table top poker tables which can be placed over the top of an existing kitchen table and then folded up for later use.
Function
Poker requires a minimum of two players in order to get the game started but can be played with eight people in most games. The top of a casino table is made from speed cloth or baize to help promote a smooth surface for dealing cards as well as distributing chips. Poker tables allow the players as well as the dealer to easily play cards at elbow level allowing for ease of turning the cards as well as being able to observe players' facial expressions as players place their bet.
Features
In large-scale poker tournaments such as the World Series of Poker, table and pocket cameras spotlight the dealer and the players, giving viewers in the audience as well as those watching from home a behind-the-scenes look at the player's cards and the moves they utilize. The edge around the poker table is called "the rail" and is a supportive feature for players to rest their arms while they place bets and look at their cards. Often there is an area made of plastic or wood called a "racetrack" in which ashtrays and beverages can be placed.
Identification
Poker tables can be found in casinos, restaurants, bars, poker halls and in homes around the world. Custom logos and designs often adorn the center of most poker tables and recognize the casino or tournament that is being played. Some poker table manufacturers offer customized logos or names that can be placed on the table prior to shipment to create an individualized effect. Many poker tables include green or blue felt tops with written bets, chip holders and drink holders as well.
Considerations
When playing at a poker table at a casino or resort, one must ask the dealer what the minimum bet is for playing a hand. Some casinos offer high-limit poker rooms where the minimum amount to bid is far less than at a standard poker table. Knowing the minimum bet is essential in not being disappointed or losing large amounts of money in a short period of time. For amateur home playing, a poker chip set is a great way to create a poker gaming atmosphere for entertaining guests and players and makes the game easier to manage and understand.
