How to Play 5-Card Stud
Overview
Although it is no longer as popular as other poker games such as Texas Hold-Em, 5-Card Stud is still regularly played in many parts of the world. Following the basic rules of poker, 5-Card Stud adheres to the normal structure of hand values. You can play the game in a variety of betting formats, but no-limit and pot-limit are two of the more common options. As its name suggests, each player ends up with five cards after several rounds of betting.
Step 1
Determine how much the required initial bet, also known as the bring-in, for each hand will be.
Step 2
Deal one card face-down to each player, starting with the person to the left of the dealer. Continue by dealing one card face-up to each player, again starting with the first player left of the dealer.
Step 3
Complete the first round of betting. The player with the lowest face-up card is required to pay the bring-in bet. Other players follow by choosing to call the bring-in or fold.
Step 4
Deal one card into a discard pile and then deal one card face-up to each player. Complete another betting round, starting with the player with the best two face-up cards.
Step 5
Place another card from the deck into the discard pile and then a third face-up card to each player. The remaining players complete another round of betting, starting with the player with the best three face-up cards.
Step 6
Deal one more card into the discard pile and then give each player a final face-up card. The final round of betting starts with the player who has the best hand showing face-up. All remaining players after betting reveal their cards, and the player with the best five-card hand wins.
